Plot
Karen E. Lange’s Nevermore: A Photobiography of Edgar Allan Poe examines the life of the interesting American author. Born in Boston in 1809, Poe experienced tragedy early in life with his father leaving his family at 3, and his mother dying from tuberculosis shortly afterwards. Poe was then informally adopted by socialites John and Frances Allan. Unfortunately, the Allan’s, though caring, never truly accepted Edgar into the family. As Edgar grew into adulthood, he began to try to make his way into the world. Poe’s life was tumultuous, finding both extreme periods of happiness as well as sadness. Nevertheless, Poe is considered by some to be the founder of Detective Fiction, the master of Horror, and even dabbled in Science Fiction.

Review
Lange’s photobiography takes a well known American author and begins to uncover his life. Plagued by intense emotions, addictions, and unrequited love, Poe’s life begins to mirror some of the emotions and plots portrayed within his stories. Nevertheless, Lange is able to create a picture of a man, a man who above all was a part of his time and its restraints. Early tragedies obviously affected Poe’s outlook on life, but were not the complete answers. Nor could it be said that his own demons or that of his foster family solely contributed to Poe’s emotional state. Ultimately, Poe could be seen as a man well aware of the human condition. Lange’s book becomes a revealing account as well as one which respects Poe both as an author and as a person.

I found this biography to be interesting. The author does a good job making Poe approachable to all age groups. Additionally, the pictures help readers see Poe, his life, and his descent. Junior High School Students are also required to write an essay based upon a biography.
